TO AVOID EXTRA TAXES

FREE STATE FINANCE POLICY

WITHHOLDING OF ITS DUES PROPOSAL OF GOVERNMENT APPEAL TO OPPOSITION By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 7 p.m. Dublin, June 16. The Dail read the Finance Bill a second time by 68 votes to 58 to-day.

The Minister of Finance (Mr. fecan McEntee) said extra taxation would be avoided if the Dail united to secure a remission of payments to Britain by withholding £1,100,000 in respect of Irish Constabulary pensions and £600,000 in respect of local loans, in addition to £3,000,000 in connection with land annuities. Mr. McEntee believed the Free State would secure these remissions if the Opposition would support the Government.

Political circles believe President de Valera’s note detailing the Free State’s reasons for withholding the land annuities will be dispatched to the Dominions Secretary (Mr. J. H. Thomas) to-night.
