WEDNESDAY FOOTBALL

OHANGAI THE LEADERS.

RESULTS OF YESTERDAY'S PLAY.

Play in the South Taranaki ’Wednesday football competition was, continued yesterday, when the first round was concluded, Unemployed drawing with the leaders, Ohangai, and Normanby beating the Hawera team, City. At present Ohangai lead by a point from Normanby, with City next and Unemployed a point behind them. Championship points are:

UNEMPLOYED HOLD OHANGAI. USEFUL FORWARD RUSHES. Bustling work by Unemployed’s forwards in the first spell and deadly tackling by the whole team in the second spell held Ohangai to a 3-point draw at the Hawera Showgrounds yesterday. Unemployed showed considerable improvement on their display against City on the previous Wednesday, and their keenness has made them a factor to be reckoned with in this competition. Ohangai faced a strong sun in the first half and it was soon evident that Unemployed were intending to make a forward game of it. For practically the whole of the spell they hammered away in Ohangai’s half, but time after time when close to scoring the ball, would be kicked too hard and relief afforded the defenders. After several fruitless penalties, Guise took a kick from well out and landed a nice goal, and the score was unchanged with the • spell was called.; >

Ohangai showed more life in the. second half and endeavoured to open up the play.. Accurate tackling by the home team nullified several good , passing rushes, but from a. loose scrufninage about half-way Ohangai initiated a rush, which Dickson capped by racing over for a good try. ■ The kick failed. Unemployed attacked with vigour and it looked as if they Would score, but good defence kept them out. Mr. W. H. Canning was. the referee.

NORMANBY BEAT CITY. FORWARDS BREAK FAST. Judicious play by the Norniapby: forwards, who, although they did not receive more than their share of the ball fronr the set scrunis, broke up fast -and demoralised, the. back attacks of the City team, was responsible for Normanby’s 9 to • 3 win at home yesterday. .City ; carried play to Normanby’s twenty-five from the kick-off and Hawkins, and Smith put in a good run down the touchline, but Grejg marked and returned play. From a penalty Smith gained 20 yards, but. shortly afterwards Batchelor failed to. take a ball and Walden beat two men to score, the kick failing. City worked to Normanby-s line, . but the home forwards, returned play. The ball was booted over the line and. Velvin appeared to force, but Ropia, following up fast, was awarded a try. The kick missed. The Nprinahby backs went away in a good attacking move* ment, but fumbling .spoilt their chance. Several penalties, were missed, 'but Normanby continued to press until Smith lined at half-way. Just before half-time the City forwards..swept play to Normanby’s line, but could not cross. Normanby penned City in. their half upon resumption,, but the visiting forwards gradually worked out. The City backs staged a run, Wakarua knocking on. Shortly afterwards the same .player made a good attempt with a penalty, but could not goal. The Normafiby backs attacked, and from City territory Walden goaled from a penalty. Mid-field play followed until the City backs opened out for Kerr to break clean through and score below the posts after a long run. The kick missed. City attacked continuously until the final whistle. Mr. T. J. Hurley was the referee. ■> , • SOUTH TARANAKI RUGBY. DRAW FOR SECOND ROUND GAMES. SCOUT TROOP AT PATEA. COMMITTEE AND OFFICERS. The Mayor of Patea (Mr. F. Ramsbottom) presided at a public meeting convened by the Mayoress to form a Boy Scout troop. Mesdames Ramsbottom, Masters, Lester, G; Williams, Prescott, Hall, Spooner, Laing and Misses Hemingway, ' Williams and Hamerton, and Messrs C. V. Whittington, H. S. Pauling, J. P. Hal,!, E. F. Hemingway and L. J. Clark, were present. The chairman stated that it had been thought advisable to re-form a Scout troop to replace the one they had had some years ago. It having been decided to form a troop, those present were elected a committee, Messrs Whittington and Clark declining. As Mr. Clark ha'’ been scoutmaster of the old troop and did not wish to again act in that capacity, Mr. Pauling was elected scoutmaster, and the Rev. W. H. Walton assistant scoutmaster. The Rev. A. W. Smaill was appointed secretary. The Rev. W. H. Walton was appointed a joint trustee to replace the Rev. W. T. Martin, who had left the district. The committee decided to meet and discuss Scouting affairs immediately following guide meetings, as most of the committee are already associated with Guiding. Miss Edna Williams was appointed cubmistress. Mr. C.' V.' Whittington, wished the organisation success. The work was a great one, he said, hut it needed a great deal of time and attention. He had handled the bld’troop until it was properly organised and had' resigned in favour of Mr. Clark. ••■•- Mr. Clark wished the committee and officers ‘ success with - the ' new organisation in the difficult job they had undertaken. The boys of ’Patea were probably over-catered for, as miles of river banks and sea beaches, open country, an .excellent domain and a host of sports bodies arid organisations providing avenues for their activities. The schools’ amateur athletic association very efficiently catered for them; and the Scout committee would find it difficult to offset the. riiany counter-attrac-tions. It ‘was difficult to see what Scouting would provide that the boys •did not already enjoy. , Mr. Pauling invited criticism as • well as'support! . ■ / PERSONAL. Mrs. N.
