ORIENTAL ASSUME LEAD

SOUTHERN DIVISION HOCKEY.

ALHAMBRA TEAM WELL BEATEN.

By a. decisive win yesterday over their club-mates Oriental assumed the lead in the southern division of the Taranaki hockey competition. Oriental had all the better of the game and ■beat Alhambra by two goals to nil. Alhambra were a, little unlucky that Watson received a knock on the ankle early, which impaired his speed. Oriental, with raking forward attacks, were the first to show out. Percy’s centring pass was interrupted by Ryan, who sent his forwards away to force a short corner. Watson’s shot was over the bar, and almost immediately Oriental attacked. Windle’s shot was high. Oriental continued to hold an advantage and Pennington put one in, but raised his stick in doing so. After a couple of Alhambra breakaways Oriental were back again and Ryan had to concede a penalty corner to save. Then F. Clarke missed a fairly easy shot, while Kehely saved another hot one. Alhambra came more into the picture with 'Watson, despite his injured ankle, playing pretty hockey. Brough broke up one movement brilliantly. Oriental swung back again for Percy to put one past Kehely. Halftime came with Alhambra attacking. Just as Oriental had got righi down to it in the first spell Alhambra started the second strongly. Oriental made occasional breakaways and once, had a splendid chance until Percy got offside. Pennington, however, led them back again. Beating Sehinkel he drew Ryan, to leave Clarke a sitting shot. Carter paved the way for an Alhambra attack, but they were penalised in the circle. Back again, they were penalised right in the goal-mouth, itself. Oriental forwards began to come on to their game again and kept the defence busy. Off-side prevented an almost certain goal, Alhambra provided a thrill with a beautiful movement, which -only failed when Purser was bustled off his shot. Oriental threw themselves into the attack with increased vigour. Pennington missed the- simplest of, shots at close quarters. Messrs. Ryburh and McFadyen refereed. The third Hawera team, now known as Kia Ora, were beaten by Auroa at Ha wera by four goals to two. For the winners West (2), Catell and Riley scored, while McGlashan and L. Foy sewed for the losers.
