BRILLIANT SUNSETS
WIDESPREAD PHENOMENON. VISIBLE IN AUSTRALIA. Many brilliantly coloured sunsets have been observed in New Zealand recently and it is interesting to note that these peculiar sunsets have also been observed in Australia. A member of the Meteorological Office in Adelaide, writing recently to an Auckland resident, asking if abnormal sunsets had been witnessed in the Dominion, said: “Every clear evening since April 20 a very red afterglow has been seen here. Just after the sun has set a smoke haze' of apparently high altitude and having a banded effect can be seen for a while and afterwards it assumes a rosy tint and later almost crimson. The phenomenon has also been seen in several places in Western Australia and may be visible all round the Southern Hemisphere.” The correspondent mentions .that the smoke haze and the consequent ruddy sunsets may be caused by the eruption of the South American volcano early in April, as was recently suggested by Dr. Kidson, the Government meteorologist.
