ELTHAM ANGLICAN CHURCH

PARISHIONERS ELECT OFFICERS. LOSS ON THE YEAR’S WORKING. The annual meeting of All Saints Church parishioners, Eltham, was held on Thursday evening, the vicar presiding. The annual report of the secretary, Mr. E. H. Linnell, referred to the departure of the vicar, the Rev. C. W. Whitacre, on extended holiday in England and to the Rev. A. J. Beck, acting as vicar for six months. During his stay Mr. Beck did a wonderful amount of good work for the parish and great regret was felt at his departure. In December Mr. Whitacre resigned and the present vicar, the Rev. W. Langston, was appointed. Although he had not long, been in the district it was found what a splendid choice had been made. The social gatherings during the year had.been well attended and very successful, although not quite as successful as in the previous year. The vestry regretted that it had to present an unsatisfactory, balance-sheet. Although every economy possible had been made there was a deficit bn the year’s working. The three main sources of income—donations, offertories and bazaar—were down £227 9s lOd, a de-, crease of about 45 per cent. It was urged that parishioners realise their responsibility if they wished the vestry to carry on the work of the parish. The offertories showed an increase of £24 for the year ,and it was gratifying to see much larger attendance. The financial statement showed a deficit of £39 6s on the year. The vicar, the Rev. W. Langston, read his report, which stated: 1 have visited 150 houses up to date. The Easter services at Eltham and at Mangatoki were very well attended. I would like the Church Magazine to go into every home. I would like to see everyone adopt the envelope system of offering. If every church family would do this, it would assure the church of a better financial standing, and the house to house canvassing, could thus be avoided. . The election of officers resulted:— Vicar’s warden, Mr. G. H. Mann; peoSle’s warden,, Mr. May; vestry, fessrs. F. Silver, Mackay, Thompson, Moss, Mahon, McWilliam, Crump, Linnell Best; auditor, Mr. Thompson. Mr. Linnell was elected secretary and Mr. Mackay treasurer at a subsequent meeting of the vestry. It was resolved on Mr. Silver’s motion to end a letter of appreciation te Mr. J. Taylor, who was accorded a vote of thanks for his valuable services to the church. Mr. Taylor is leaving the district shortly. As it was impossible to obtain a delegate to the Sypod at Wellington it was decided to ask the Bishop to nominate a representative of the. parish.
