CYCLING HANDICAPS

PENALTIES OF SCRATCH RIDERS. LIMITATIONS OF TRACKS. In connection with the penalties by handicappers on scratch riders of cycle events in Ceritral Taranaki, mentioned in the report of the Pukengahu sports yesterday, the secretary of the Midhirst Sports Club has drawn attention to a possible misconstruction which may affect the good name of the scratch riders, Parker and Ritchie. He states that prior to the running of the three mile cycle event at Midhirst the scratch riders were re-handicapped and placed on the 80 yard mark. The limit men and some of the other more favoured riders at once entered a vigorous protest, stating their intention of not riding unless the original handicapping was adhered to. Officials controlling the cycle events then put Ritchie and Parker back to scratch, from which position they started. After riding about ten laps without materially reducing the gap, both scratch men realised the hopelessness of their position and pulled out of the race. The position as the Midhirst club sees it is that on the average track available at country meetings the limit men can ride just as quickly as the scratch competitors. It is not a matter of trying or not trying, but simply that the speed limitations of individual tracks are not taken into account in assessing handicaps. FRONTIERSMEN’S SHOOT. It is from a rather pessimistic viewpoint that the third annual report of the Wellington Bantam Club has been drawn up, but the report states that there was one bright spot in the club’s year. As there had been no show at Petone last year the club had held its annual exhibition in conjunction with the Stratford Poultry and Winter Show Association. The event had been one of the most succesful bantam shows in the Dominion and 98 birds had been shown. The English standard of excellence had been strictly adhered to. The asociation gave permision to the club to hold its exhibition at Stratford^,again this year. r ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEIdENTS. The annual ball of the Eltham Lawn Tennis Club is to be held in the Eltham Town Hall on Alon day, Alay 9, and the committee in now at work making preparations. In past years the tennis club’s ball has been the outstanding social event of the year, and it is hoped to make this year’s function equal to any. Young people are reminded of the especial efforts being made by the Toko Football Club to provide a entertainment at the dance to be held in I the Toko' Hall on Thursday night following the junior seven-a-side tournaI ment for the Kerrin Cup.
