TANGARAKAU MARRIED MEN
DISCHARGED RAILWAY WORKERS. MINISTER HAS MATTER IN HAND. .The Minister of PubEc Works (the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates) in reply to Mr. W. J. Polson, M.P., who referred to the Minister & letter from Mr. A. Wallace, secretary of the Tangarakau branch of the Workers’ Union, has notified Mr. Polson that inquiries ere being made to ascertain if something more can be I done for the 40 married men recently I discharged from the Stratford-Main Trunk railway works. “I am doing the best I can in order that the reductions being made in the Public Works Department staffs will create as little dislocation and inconvenience to the men as possible,” Mr. .Coates stated. COMING OF AGE. PARTY TO MR. JOHN WHITE. To celebrate the coming of age of their son, Mr. John White, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. White, Cardiff, held a. very enjoyable social gathering recently. Parlour games were held between dances, the winners being Mrs. J. A. White and Miss Purdy and Messrs. Purdy. A humorous recitation was given by Mr. Smith. The supper table was tastefully decorated with flowers, and there was a birthday cake with 21 candles. Mr. J. P. White congratulated his son on the attainment-of his majority and presented him with a gold key, after which the candles were lighted. After extinguishing them Mr. J. White cut the cake. On behalf of those present Mr. Smith extended congratulations and felicitations, emphasising the esteem in which the guedf is held by neighbours and friends. Mr. John White thanked the gathering for the felicitations and many gifts. Air. E. Edwards, Huiroa, proposed the toast to Mr. and Airs. White. A vote of thanks was accorded Alesdames Winmill and Peterson, who assisted with the supper. Music was supplied by Messrs. J. A. White (accordeon), R. F. Smith (violin) and J. Purdy (pipes). Mr. Smith w as master of ceremonies. Among those present were Mr. Chas. White (Ngaere), Mr. Robt. F. Smith, Air. and Airs. Winmill, Airs. Peterson, Air. H. Peterson and Air. P. Peterson (Stratford), Airs. Alasscy and Air. and Mrs. Edwards (Huiroa), Air. Purdy and the Misses Purdy, Air. Jack Purdy, Air. and Airs. J. A. White and family, Aliss Carmen Gartner, Airs, and Aliss L. Dymond, Air. A. and Air. W. Dymond, Mr. and Mrs. Fox and family, Air. Cecil Stewart, Air. Petherbridge, Air. W. Han- 1 cock, Air. D.
