DEFEAT OF GOVERNMENT

CENSURE MOTION CARRIED

RESIGNATION IN VICTORIA

END OF, LABOUR MINISTRY

■STRONG NATIONALIST MOVE

By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright.

Rec. 1 a.m.

Melbourne, April 13.

The no-confidence motion in the Victorian Legislative Assembly was carried by 29 votes to 25 and the Hogan Labour Government is to resign.

The censure was based on the evasive reply of the acting-Premier, Mr. Tunnecliffe, to the Opposition Leader’s question whether the economy and rehabilitation plan was to be continued for a further six months.

There is now a strong movement to form a Nationalist Government led by Sir Stanley Argyle, present Leader of the Opposition. The Premier, Mr. E. J. Hogan, is on his way to England on a health-recruit-ing tour. The Prime Minister, Mr. J. A. Lyons, announced to-day that the Premiers’ conference, which had been fixed to open to-day, will not meet until to-morrow owing to the crisis in the Victorian Parliament, which is preventing the Victorian representatives from attending. It was understood that if the Victorian Government were defeated the conference would be postponed until a new Government is elected.

The Sydney Sun correspondent says it is believed the conference has arranged with the banks to obtain an advance of £10,000,009 for works to absorb the unemployed, provided the States reach an agreement to persevere with the original Melbourne economy plan.
