AID TO EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS
WIDOWS’ PENSION SCHEME.
FREE GRANTS FOR REPAIRS.

Wellington, March 9. A meeting of the Central. Earthquake Relief Committee, with Mr. Forbes presiding, decided that £43,000 be set-aside to provide pensions for earthquake widows and orphans. and grants for injured persons, the basis of payment of pensions to be 225. 6d. a week for widows and 15s. a week for each child. Deductions are to be made in cases where widows’ pensions are already being received, but not in respect to old-age ■pensions. Pension payments commence from January 1 last, aud it is understood that the initial disbursements will be made in the course of the next week. It was also decided that all loans for restoration of houses not exceeding £lOO in any individual case be treated as free grants, not subject to being called up by the Postmaster-General.
