USEFUL FUNCTION TO SERVE. APPOINTMENT OF OFFICERS. , “The Hawera Scottish Society has a useful function in the social life of the community,” said the retiring chief, Mr. J. E. Campbell, at the annual meeting of the society last night. “At a time like to-day people need to get together arid forget the cares of the outside world,” he added.' Goldfinch was ordered to pay. £6 3s 6d (costs 15s 6d) forthwith, in default six days’ imprisonment. E. Hickey was ordered to pay R. H. Leece and Co. £4 2s forthwith, in default four days' imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so long as . 10s a month is paid. F. Luke was ordered to pay J. Exley £5 7s 9d (15s) forthwith, in default five days’ imprisonment,/the warrant not to be issued until May 9. On the plaint of T. Thwaites, Joseph Quinn, was ordered to pay £l6 15s 9d (£1 Is) in default 17 days’ imprisonment. On the plaint of Bennett and Sutton, H. E. White was ordered to pay £1 16s 8d forthwith, in default two days’ imprisonment, the warrant not to issue until March 21. C. H. Jones was ordered to pay Wright and Stephenson £l5 15s 9d (£1 Is) forthwith, in default 16 days’ imprisonment. 9 — ' 1 NOXIOUS WEEDS CHARGES. STRAYING STOCK dWNER FINED.. Several minor charges were heard by Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Hawera Court yesterday. On information laid by Mr. H. R. Denize, stock inspector of the Department of Agriculture at Hawera, Violet Isabel Candy was convicted and fined £2 (costs 10s.) for failing to clear her Whakamara land of ragwort. On a similar charge Margaret Boyle, Patea, was convicted and fined £4; with-costs 10s. Four horses belonging to Roy Hayward were found wandering on the Ohawe Road on March 1, and the owner was convicted and fined 2iss. (costs £1 os. 6d.). . For riding an unlighted bicycle along Glover Road on the night of February 26 Alfred Catley was fined 10s. (costs 10s.). PERSONAL ITEMS. Complimentary references to the work of Mr. J. E. Campbell as chief of the Hawera Scottish Society during the last three years were made at the annual meeting of the society last night. Despite numerous requests Mr. Campbell declined to again accept nomination for the office. Many old friends and relatives attended the funeral of the late Mr. Daniel Barry at, Hawera on Tuesday. Before the funeral left New Plymouth a Mass was held at St. Joseph’s Church by the Rev. Father Minogue, who also celebrated a Requiem Mass at St. Joseph’s, Hawera, where lie was assisted by the Rev. Father Foley. The following wore also present at the funeral: Fathers Doolaghty and Foster (Taihape), Lynch (Marton), Forrestall (Inglewood), Heanley (Inglewood) and Hegarty (Patea). Several cars from New Plymouth joined the long cortege that followed to the graveside. There was a large number of beautiful wreaths. The bearers were Messrs. W. Corcoran, W. Condon, J.
