PUNIHO SCHOOL CONCERT

TEACHERS’ WORK EULOGISED. The Puniho school committee decided that instead of the usual afternoon ceremony which has been held every year at breaking-up time, it would hold an evening this year instead, it being the opinion of the members that this would give the children a better opportunity to display their talents. That this move was a very wise one was shown by the exceptionally large number of parents and visitors that attended on Thursday evening. The school was crowded to capacity and many patrons had to watch the performers from outside. The decorations chosen were coloured streamers criss-crossed to form squares on the ceiling and the walls, decorated with clusters of red and white roses. This, combined with the many coloured and fancy dresses worn by the children, formed a picture seldom if ever witnessed in the schoolroom previously. The work of making the fancy dregses, etc., was done by Miss Taylor, the headmistress, who deserves great credit for the amount of trouble she must have gone to to fulfil this undertaking. The concert was of an unusually high standard and the children acquitted themselves remarkably well. The training of the children and arranging of the programme, etc., were in the hands of Miss Taylor and her assistant, Miss O’Callaghan, and that their work was thoroughly appreciated by both children and parents must have been shown to them by the enthusiastic reception the performers received and by the numerous congratulations they received during the evening. The programme was varied to suit all tastes. At the conclusion of the concert the chairman of the school committee, Mr. T. Brurisden, on behalf of the parents, thanked the teachers for training the children and presenting such a splendid concert. Mr. Brunsden also referred to the fact that both the headmistress and assistant teacher were leaving the district this year, and he was voicing the feelings of the district when he stated how much they regretted that owing to a fall in grade of the school it was necessary for them to leave. Both teachers had done splendid work in Puniho, both for the schol and in helping any function in the district, and he wished them success in their new schools and felt sure they would display the. same enthusiasm for the welfare of their new school and district as they had done for Puniho. The teachers have accepted positions at Te Kiri. , Mrs. Brunden also mentioned that tne new teacher would be Mr. Cornwall. The children were then qntertamed at supper, after which the floor was cleared for dancing, which was kept up until a late hour. The music was provided by Skipper Manu, Mr. W. Wilan beinw master of ceremonies. The committee responsible for the organisation of the function was Mr. Brunsden (chairman), R. J. Bell (secretary) and Messrs. Gilmour and Moffitt.
