MANGAHUME SCHOOL
. . BREAK-UP CONCERT. 'Pile Mangahume school children on Thursday presented their concert to a very appreciative and record gathering of parents and friends. One could hardly discriminate between the items as all were of a high standard and were equally well performed. A strenuous task fell to Miss Vooght, who accompanied throughout for dance and song. The opening number was a bracket of four national songs, “Ar hyd y nos,” “Golden Slumbers,” “The Harn that Once,” and “Robin Adair,” sung by the standards. The primers pleased the audience with two dances, “Tappie Tappie Tousie” and “Pop Goes the Weasel.” Entering well into the spirit of the poem, Bernie Hickey recited “Vespers.” The old hunting song “John Peel,” was sung in spirited time by the standards. Sung nursery rhymes were followed by two” dances by the standards, “Merry Go Round” and “Hail King George.” Jim Hickey gave the impression that he knew something about the art of fishing as he recited “Down by the Pond.” The standards were heard in “Sweet and Low” and “The Night Raiders.” Especially pleasing was the latter as, sung unaccompanied, it began slowly and softly, then gathered, speed and volume, and then faded away. The primers faced the audience with a group of three dences, “Cherry Dance,” “Will You Please Be My Partner,” and “The Shoemaker.” The standards followed with the pretty dance “Reap the Flax.” John Masefield’s “Cargoes” was splendidly recited by Thelma Cox. The standards followed with a New Zealand song, “Gentle Spring,” and the old Neapolitan song, “Santa Lucia.” “A Summer Lullaby” was sung by Georgina Mauriri. Performers, and audience thoroughly enjoyed the singing games performed by the primers. Frances Hickey ably maintained the standard set by the earlier reciters with her item “Berries.” The negro spiritual “Swing Low Sweet Chariot,” was sung by Bernie, Frances and Jim Hickey as soloists, accompanied by a humming chorus. The sea shanty “Capstan Bar,” was sung with great spirit by Bernie Hickey and chorus. The concert Concluded with a very creditable performance of the Christmas carol “Adeste Fideles.” Christmas presents of a book for each pupil were then presented by Mr. Morris, chairman of the committee, who thanked the children and the teacher, Miss Vooght, for the splendid concert which had been given. Little Joan Short on behalf of the school children presented Miss Vooght with a bouquet made by Mrs. Morris. The gathering sang “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow” and Miss Vooght replied, thanking the children for their kind thought and appreciation. Especially she appreciated the splendid example set by the standard six pupils through their devotion to duty and loyalty to her. Supper was served and a dance followed, the music being supplied by Mr. J. Hickey (Opunake) with extras by Mr. R. J. Morris.
