MAHATMA GANDHI'S DENIAL
ALLEGED INTERVIEW IN ROME. CONFIRMATION BY EDITOR By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. • Rome, Dec. 18. The editor of the Giornale D’ltalia, Signor Gayda, in to-day’s issue, writes: “We can only confirm. Mahatma Gandhi’s interview, which was prondunced in the presence of other witnesses.” At Port Said Gandhi denied that he had been interviewed in Rome. A message from Rome, published on Wednesday, stated that though he steadfastly refused to see British journalists, Mr. Gandhi gave interviews with other journalists, in which he made more sweeping declarations than he ever ventured to make in London. “We won’t pay taxes and we won’t work for Britain,” he was reported to have said. “We will completely isolate _ British authorities and institutions. India would certainly be crushed if Britain resorted to violence, but she has enormous reserve?, which Britain cannot ignore, in tjie shape of passive resistance. Every kind of British goods will be boycotted, and this powerful aggravation has already had serious effects on the British financial situation and unemployment. For us the Round Table Conference was a long-drawn-out _ agony,. but it proved to England the spirit of India and laid bare Britain’s real intention.”
