CORRESPONDENCE
THE POUND SCHEME.
(To the Editor). Sir, —Kindly permit me space to make a special appeal to the residents of New Plymouth and surrounding districts for their weekly support to the “pound scheme” 'recently inaugurated by the New Plymouth branch of the National Council of Women. This scheme was launched at the urgent request of the New Plymouth Relief Association, which through its personnel is in touch with the distress in our midst.
Most people are aware that there is a certain amount of distress, but I venture to say very few people really appreciate the very great amount of distress, and almost hunger, we have in our midst. Numerous heart-rending eases could be quoted to support this appeal, but I feel sure your readers will accept my assurance that in a large number of families the position is almost desperate.
Contributing a pound weight of provisions weekly moans definitely helping some very needy ease. Will all those who possibly can help make a point of sending their contribution each Friday morning to the nearest school or to the old Soldiers’ Club, King Street. The distribution is left entirely to the Relief Association, and care is taken to avoid overlapping and to see only the very needy eases are supplied.—l am, etc.,
P. E. STAIXTOX. Chairman. Xew Plymouth. Relief Association. October 15, 1031,
