SCOUTS END YEAR’S WORK

ANNIVERSARY OF ST. ANDREW’S.

The St. Andrew’s (Stratford) troop of Boy Scouts celebrated its first anniversary in St. Andrew’s hall bn Thursday night, when there was a large attendance of parents and friends besides all thj committeemen and 34 Scouts. Scoutmaster W. H. Humphrey extended a welcome to the District Commissioner, W. F. Horner, and mentioned there was a man present who had been in his troop 20 years ago. The commissioner presented one-year service stars to Assistant-Scoutmaster 1 A. Dick, Scouts E. Robinson, W. and D. Dixon, S. Dick, E. Hoskin and G. Sayers. Four tenderfoots were enrolled. Besides a haka of welcome the Scouts provided a programme of items which included tugs-ofwar, boxing, first-aid demonstration, and all exhibition box- • ing bout between R. Ward and Scoutmaster Arthur.

JOBLIN HOCKEY CUP. ELTHAM LADIES’ TEAM WINNERS. The Eltham ladies’ hockey team won the Joblin Cup in a hockey contest at Taihape on Thursday. Their score in the final game was two goals to nil. The Eltham team won the trophy two years ago, but last year they were unable to travel to take part in the tournament. DOUGLAS GENERAL AND PERSONAL The final party of the series conducted by the Douglas hall committee was held on Tuesday. Misses Edna Rodgers and L. Walter were equal and Miss Rodgers won the cut. Mr. E. Jacobsen won the men’s prize. For the points prizes Misses L. Walter and L. Brown tied and agreed to halve the prize. Mr. Eric Jacobsen won the men’s points prize.* The “tin-canners” attended in full force to pay their respects to Mr. and Mrs. A. Phillips. A pleasant evening was spent in cards and games. A floor rug and crystal vase were presented to Mr. and Mrs. Phillips, these gifts being bought with the balance of the money in hand from the previous presentation.

For the past few seasons the Douglas factory hats run the whole year, but this winter the milk supply did not warrant its running, so it has been closed for a fortnight. It will re-open for the new season to-day. Mr. and Mrs. McCracken have returned from a motor trip to Palmerston North and Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. O’Reilly and Miss Needham have returned from a holiday spent at Wanganui. Recently Mr. and Mrs. Skousgaard motored to Palmerston North to attend the wedding of Mrs. Skousgaards niece, Miss Stewart. Mrs. , Battersby, who spent an extended holiday with her daughter, Airs. Bird, has returned to her home at Wellington. , Mr. and Mrs. N. Greenwell, Huntly, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. H. Wylie. Mr. B. Ducker recently paid a short visit to his aunt, Mrs. Rumball. Mr. Latham is spending his vacation in the Auckland district. GENERAL ITEMS. The Egmont Box Company has purchased a sawmill plant, which it is proposed to erect at the rear of the present factory at Eltham for the purpose of manufacturing cheese crates. Already a stock of pinus insignia logs has been assembled, and it is expected that the mill will be in operation in two or three weeks’ time.. The varying of the allocation for unemployment was regarded as unsatisfactory by the Elthain Unemployment Committee, which met on Wednesday, and it was decided to write to the Minister of Labour pointing out the committee’s objection. The chairman, Mr. I. J. Bridger, said it was most inconvenient to have the allocation varied from week to week.

The following players will represent the Mangamingi Golf Club in a match against Stratford, at Stratford, this week-end: H. S. Turner, F. Belcher, R. Wilson, E. Wells, S; Addenbrooke, W. Hardwick-Smith, Hickey, H. Sinclair, R. C'oplestone. J. Best, G. Brown, W. Barber, E. Woodley, P. R. Brown, E. Dallinger, L. Stretton. The selection of Mr. Frederick Gawith, Eltham, as the official Reform candidate for the Egmont electorate, has been confirmed by the Hon. Mr. J. G. Coates, as head of the party.

A Rugby team from the Rongotai Boys’ College, a branch of # the Wellington College, ■ will arrive in Stratford on Friday and will play a team from the Stratford Technical High School on the following day. They will be entertained at a social in the evening.

On behalf of the women’s division of the Farmers’ Union at Tahora and also the younger set, Mrs. C. R. McCutcheon has forwarded £2 10s to Mrs. W. J. Polson with the request that it be used for the relief of distress in the Whangamomona district. A special meeting of the Tahora branch was held last Wednesday, when an interesting discussion was held as to the best method of relieving family distress in the district. Mrs. Polson has handed the donation on to Mrs. F. Bowler, secretary to the Women’s Central Relief Committee at Stratford, In addition to this £2 10s the Tahora branch has already forwarded 15s to the Stratford town clerk ! s appeal fund.
