Among the many visitors from Hawera for the Eltham Golf Ball were Misses Jean Laiierson, Frances Murray, May Monahajn, Leslie Burgess, Alma Conway, Connie Mills, Joan Coleman, Dolly Meyrick and J. Evans.

Mrs. Whitehead entertained a few friends at afternoon tea this week. She received her guests wearing a frock of black georgette. Ambng those present were Mesdames Bright, McDiarmid (Auckland), L. Bull, F. W. Sutton, W. Tonics and Woodward.

Mrs. Jobson was hostess at the Women’s Club on Thursday afternoon for bridge. Among the players were Mesdames, F. W. Sutton, Ablett, F. Livingston, T. A. Kinmont, Stevens, J. B. Murdoch, Meyrick and Harrop, Misses Sutton, J. MacDonald and Hunter.

Miss S. Farquhar, who was for 12 months home sister at the Hawera hospital and then matron at Waimate, has been appointed matron of the Timaru hospital. At. the last meeting of the Hawera Hospital Board a motion was passed conveying the congratulations of members to Miss Farquhar and wishing her every success.

Mrs. E. R. S. Dale was hostess on Monday afternoon of this week. To receive her guests she wore a frock of brown spotted crepe-de-chine. Among the guests were Mesdames Bennett (Manaia), Stephens (Manaia), Patterson (Manaia), Inwood (Ciiristchurcli), W. O. Williams, C. Bayley and A. Coleman.

A gift evening in honour of Miss N. Kirwin and Mr. S. Lay, who are shortly to be mairied, was given by Mrs. H. Ritter at her home, Ketematae Road, on Monday. Musical items, games and dancing were the order of the evening, and the guests were the recipients of many gifts and good wishes from their friends. Those present were Mesdames 11. Ritter, T. J. Allan and Kirwin (New Plymouth), Mis«ses M. and I. Ritter, M. Griffen, P. Ganaway, N. Adams, J. Catchpole, K. Brown, I. Haybittie, V. Allan, P. Bolland, P. and J. McGlashan, B. Stevens, N. and A. Shannon and M. Campbell.

Mrs. H. D. McDonald, Ketemarae Road, was hostess at an at-home on Wednesday at Normanby. The room was decorated in autumn tints and wattle. There were 50 guests, and the afternoon was spent in music, singing and competitions, the community singing being much enjoyed. Solos were sung by Mesdames Sunderland and Carter and Miss Gibson. Recitations were given by Miss Harcourt. Each item was encored. Accompaniments were played by Mrs. Kendell and (Miss Marcia Sunderland. Mrs. W. E. Carter gave an account of the recent Women’s Division conference at Wellington. The afternoon was arranged on behalf of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union.

Miss Sutton gave her home on Tuesday for a card afternoon for the Hawera Croquet Club. Among the other hostesses vl'ho assisted Miss Sutton were Mesdames McL’Dowie, Wills, J. Campbell, and J. B. Murdock. Mrs. H. W. Sutton wore a frock of black lace with posy of’violets. Among the players were: Mesdames C. H. Washer, Jobson, G. Buckeridge, Vickeridge, T. A. Kiumart, E. Livingston, G. Ryan, Abbett, Payne, C. Bayley, Corderv, G. Meyrick, Wyllie, R. Henderson, F. W. Sutton, M. Dowling, J. Syme, S. McKay, Guy, W. Robertson, White, Dingle, A. Sutton, G. Strange, Snowdon, Gillanders, J. C. Smith, Westaway, S. Adamson, J. C. Ekdahl, J. Gray, Stevens, Harrop, B. Douglas, Misses Power, Hay-McKenzie, Buchanan, J. MacDonald, B. Ryan, M. Washer, S. Washer, Cameron, Franklin and Young. The winners for the bridge prizes were: Mrs. C. Bayley, Mrs. C. H. Washer and Miss S. Washer, while the winner of the five hundred was Mrs. S. McKay. WELBOURN BIRTHDAY PARTY. An enjoyable 21st birthday party was rriven on Wednesday evening at WelHall, Avenue Road, by Mrs. Furze in honour of her eldest daughter, Nina. There were upwards of 100 guests. Mrs. Fflrze was attired in black crepe-de-chine and Mies Nina Furze in a smart black eatin dress with a pretty pink spray of flowers on the corsage. A delightful programme had been arranged for th amusement of the guests, including games and novelty dances. A Monte Carlo was won by Miss Edna ?lacfarlane and Mr. T. Avery. Music was provided by Mrs. Martin, Mr. H. Ibbotson and Mr. C. Ibbotson. Mr. A. Furze was master of ceremonies. Vocal items were given by Mrs. H. Ibbotson, a dance by Miss Kitty Harper, an elocutionary item by Mr. Arthur Jordan and a violin solo by Mr. H. Ibbotson. .Many of the nondancers played euchre, the winners bein n- Mrs. Osborn and Mr. Les Richards. Arthur Jordan proposed the toast of Miss Furze and spoke of the great help she had at all times rendered to the ‘Welbourn committee since its inception. Musical honours were accorded Miss Furze. The toast of the hostess, Mrs. Furze, was proposed by Mr. H. Ibbotson, who spoke of Mrs. Furze’s readiness at all times to help in any good work. MISS R. JULIAN HONOURED. On Monday evening Mrs. J. Harrigan was hostess at a gipsy tea given in honour of Miss Rene Julian, who is shortly to be married. Many girl friends of Miss Julian were present, and a very happy time was spent by all. Carpet golf was played, the winner being Miss Julian. Competitions were also held during tho evening and were won by Miss Isobel Chambers and Mrs. H. Parker. Gifts of towels were received by the guest of honour from those present.
