TIMARU DISAPPOINTED

REFUSED BROADCAST LICENSE. Some disappointment is felt at Tijnam at the decision of the Post and Telegraph Department not to permit the installation of a radio station in Timaru. The position is that radio reception in Timaru has been very, difficult on account of excessive local interference, and also because the town and district are in the distortional area of some of the more popular stations. For these reasons local enthusiasts investigated the possibility of installing a station, and approached the Rado Broadcasting Company. That company offered co-operation with the local radio society to the extent of lending a transmitting set and relaying programmes. The intention was that .the emergency transmitting station should begin operations on July 30. with the inception of international programmes from Station 3YA. It is understood that, on application being made to the Post and Telegraph Department for the necessary permission, a license was refused on the ground that, as the radio system was at present under consideration! no further licenses would be issued. This decision is by no means popular in Timaru, more especially as it is only a few weeks since a license was granted a “B” station in a northern city. Speculation is rife as to whether this decision means the complete banning of “B” class stations under Ibo Government’s future broadcasting plan?
