OKAU-AHITITI NEWS

SOCIAL, SPORT AND GENERAL The annual ball under the auspices of the Tongaporutu Tennis Club took place in the Tongaporutu Hall on Friday night. The hall was well filled with local people and visitors from Mokau and Urenui, and a most enjoyable time was spent. Music was supplied by Renton’s orchestra until a late hour. Extras were played by Miss E. O’Sullivan and Mrs. Taylor. Novelty dances were held during the evening, the “Lucky Spot” waltz being won by Miss Kendrick and- Mr. I. Johnson. Mr. A. O’Donnell was master of ceremonies. As a result of rain the Okau Road is in an abominable state and. promises to remain so for the rest of the winter, only a very occasional car venturing through the mud. An enjoyable function took place last week, when several local people braved the weather and visited the Rerakapa, the occasion being a “tin-eannir v ” at Mr. and Mrs. D. Brewer’s residence. The Okau Rugby team went to Awakino on Saturday last, where Waikawau defeated them by 9 points to 3. lor Okau O’Sullivau scored an unconverted try. Only one more match is to be played, that against Mahoenui, who are in a practically unassailable position for the McMillan Shield. No shield matches will be played next Saturday as a ,Tukapa (New Plymouth) fifteen are.to try conclusions with a Tainui Sub-Union team at Awakino during the week-end. Mrs. Palmer, Mt. Messenger, and Miss D. Anderson, Okau, who are inmates of New Plymouth hospital, are progressing satisfactorily.
