HAY AND ENSILAGE STACKS

HILLSBOROUGH DISTRICT JUDGED. FARMERS’ COMPETITION RESULTS. Judging of hay and ensilage stacks in the farmers’ field competitions at Hillsborough was carried out by Messrs. J. M. Smith and C. Haynes of the Department of Agriculture on Tuesday afternoon. All the competitors and a number of others farmers, including several from outside districts, accompanied the judges. A hillside stack of millet belonging to T. Sampson contained the highest scoring ensilage. The raw material was cut at an ideal stage of growth—-when the millet had just leached full leaf, but before it had opened in flower. In the stack grass ensilage L. A. Marsh headed the list of competitors. The stack was similar in size, 90ft by 30ft, and the quality of the silage up to the standard of previous years, while there had been a reduction in wastq. Sorrenson Bros, were the only competitors in the earth pit class, and H. C. Sampson had no opposition in the hay competition. There are still entries to-be judged so the winner of the cup is not yet known. After the judging the party was provided with afternoon tea at the Hillsborough hall by Mesdames H. C. Sampson, L. Marsh, J. Sorrenson, A. J. Hale and Miss Sampson. A vote of thanks to Messrs. Smith and Haynes for judging the hay and ensilage was proposed by Mr. H. C. Sampson (president of the Hillsborough branch of the Farmers’ Union). Details of the judging are: —
