ALLEGATION OF MURDER
TRIAL OF AN EX-CANADIAN.
CROWN CASE AGAINST RICHARDS.

The trial of Reginald Norman Thomas Rickards for the alleged murder of an old man, Arthur Rossiter, aged 72, at Kaipaki commenced in the Supreme Court at Hamilton to-day before Mr. Justice Herdman. In opening the Crown case H. T. Gillies, Crown prosecutor, said that Rickards, a Canadian, came to New Zealand seven or eight years ago. Two years ago he became acquainted with the Rossiter family. He became friendly with Miss Rossiter and last August they became engaged. Owing to Rickards making no effort to get her a home the girl broke off the engagement. Some time later money was stolen from the house and Rickax’ds was accused of taking it. He cleared himself with the police. However, later at Tauranga Rickards struck Miss Rossiter on the head with a heavy instrument. While under arrest for the offence he escaped. It was while the police were searching for him that the murder ivas discovered.
The hearing is not yet completed.
