Rec. 8.25 p.m. Hftbana (Cuba), Feb. 25. The President of the Republic, General G. Machado yesterday escaped death miraculously when a bomb exploded within the wall of the Presidential palace near the President. A soldier who had been posted as guard on the roof confessed to lowering a time bomb through an air shaft to explode when -President Machado left his bed at the usual early morning hour. The soldier, however, did not know that recent plumbing adjustments had left the pipe extended through an aperture, thus preventing the bomb from reaching the intended position and the explosion shattered the apartments over General Machado's head. This was the climax to a series of bombings which had terrified the city for many weeks. The day before three bombs had wrecked a Government school and on Saturday dozens were exploded in various parts of the city. . A later message States that the President escaped death again yesterday. He was nearing the end of a public addrese when a youth among the big crowd of onlookers endeavoured to shoot him with a revolver. Bystanders seized the assailant and prevented the assassination.
