CANADIAN WINE-GROWERS’ MOVE.

Protests against the present system of selling native wine on liquor permits were made and fears of the competition of Australian wine and grape juice were voiced before the agricultural committee of the Ontario legislature on Tuesday by Ontario grape growers. . The reduction in the duty under the term of the new Australian treaty oil Australian wine aiid the elimination of the duty on Australian grapes would work to the disadvantage of grape growers, the delegation declared. The removal of the restriction on the use of fruit extracts' in the manufacture, of Ontario wine was advocated, it bent" stated that Australian wine was made with fruit extract and had a high alcoholic content. Ontario producers had to import large quantities of sugar. The extensive importation of grapes from Australia would be absolutely disastrous to the Niagara Peninsula growers. It was stated that two courses were advocated—the maintenance of the protective duties and advertising and propaganda to develop Canadian markets.
