ALL METAL FLYING BOATS
IMPERIAL AIRWAYS’ BIG FLEET.
LUXURIOUS PASSENGER SERVICE.
(British Wireless.) Rec. 5A p.m. Rugby, Feb. 24. The all-metal flying boat which will be used by Imperial Airways on the Mediterranean section of the India and Africa routes, had a successful triabat Rochester to-day. It is tile first completed of three on order with Messrs. Short Brothers. It weighs 14 tons, has four Bristol Jupiter engines developing 2400 horse-power, and is capable of 130 miles an hour. It will seat 15 passengers and can carry tons of mail. Engine noise will be reduced to a minimum in the saloon by the use of sound insulation material between the saloon covering and the outer skin of the hull. When the three new flying boats are in commission Imperial Airways will have a fleet of 34 air cargo carriers developing a total of 48,000 horse-power.
