MARKED ADVANCE IN PRICES

BUTAER QUOTED at 420 S TO I*4B. RISE OF 4s TO 5s IN CHEESE. Owing very largely to the fact that Continental demand for butter in the world’s dairy markets has increased, New Zealand butter prices were quoted on Thursday as Bs to 8s higher than last week. New Zealand butter is at 120 s to 124 s a cwt for the first time for about five months. Danish advanced very substantially and is quoted at 154 s to 150 s, a rise of 13s to 15s per cwt on last week’s prices. There is more inquiry for cheese, which has advanced about 4s for white and about 5s for coloured. New Zealand white is quoted at 54s to 56s and coloured at 55s to 575. “The Continental butter position is strong and. the market has advanced,” states a cable received yesterday by Mr. E. Griffiths from A. J. Mills and Co., 'Ltd. The following quotations are given, those for last week being in parentheses: New Zealand finest, 124 s (115 s to life), first, 122 s (114s}; Danish, 154 s to 156 s . “Tho cheese market has improved,” continues the advice* which quotes cheese at: New Zealand white, 55s to 56s (51s to 525); New Zealand coloured, 56s to 57s (51s to 525) ; Canadian white, 72s to 74s (72s to 745); Canadian coloured, 72s to 74s (72s to 745). “There is more inquiry for cheese, which has a firmer tone,” states a cable sent by Lonsdalcs on Thursday to Turner and Co. “White is quoted at 54s to 56s (51s to 53s last week) and coloured at 55s to 57s (51s to 535). The butter market is firm with a good demand,” continues the advice, which quotes Danish at Isos (1435), New Zealand at 12'0s to 124 s (114 s to I10s) and Australian at 120 s to 122 s (110 s to II3s).

“The'butter market closed very firm with Anchor at 124 s while Danish cleared up to 158 s f.o.b. Retails are Is Gd for Danish and Is 3d for colonial with a probability of both advancing again next week.” A cable to this effect was received- by Amalgamated Dairies from its London office. “Cheese advanced rapidly and closed at 575,” concludes the report. “Both butter and cheese markets closed firm,” states a report ’received by Joseph Nathan and Co., Ltd., from Trengrouse and Nathan, Ltd., yesterday/ “Butter is quoted at 122 s to 124 s (115s’), white cheese at 56s (525) and coloured at 57s (525).” ' '
