THEFT BY TRICK FROM BOY
NINEPENCE FOR HALF SOVEREIGN,
ASHBURTON NEWSAGENT FINED.

Ashburton, Feb. 13.
An unusual charge of theft was pre« ferred against Aubrey Edward Clarke in the Magistrate’s Court, The evidence showed that a newsrunner received a half-sovereign for a paper and gave 4d change. On discovering that the coin was not a sixpence, he took- it to Clarke’s shop. Accused told him it was a half-sovereign, but did not explain its value, giving him 9d for it. The defence was that accused was merely keeping tho coin for the lad. - The magistrate said it was theft by a trick, and a very mean contemptible thing to do. Accused, was fined £2, with costs. ~ . , 5 . - .
