SALTPOT WINS THE LAST

PIG SURPRISE FROM BON EVE. Saltpot was always favourite for the Waipapa Handicap, and when asked for a final effort in the straight drew away to win very comfortably from Bon Eve, who paid a sensational second dividend. Saltpot ( £SIBJ) was backed down to odds-on, with Silver Rule ( £37OJ) the only seriously fancied. The Start favoured Saltpot, who led on to the course proper from Silver Rule, Latakia and The Warden, with Singerand Gowan Lea moving up fast. There was a quick.alteration in the order in the next furlong, and down the back Singer and Gowan Lea were piloting Silver Rule, Latakia and The Warden, with the fav, ourite in a good position on the rails. The pacemakers were beateu approaching the bend and Latakia was rushed through to lead into th? straight froir. Silver Rule, Singer, The Warden, and Saltpot. The leaders all compounded and below the distance Saltpot was left clear of Miss Shef and Bon Eve was coming on the outside from the rtick. Over the last furlong Saltpot was going at a jog and won by two lengths and a half from Bon Eve, who cut Misss Shef out of second money by half a length. Silver Rule, Little Doubt, The Warden and Latakia followed. Silver Rule was beaten by the distance, and it was really a one-ljorse race. Saltpot should have no difficulty to-morrow in again beating those who finished behind him.
