NOLAN HACK GOLD CUP
ARIKIRA BEATS GRAND JURY VICTORY SCORED ON THE POST. RIDES GOOD FINISH. (By “Moturoa.’O . . The Nolan Hack Gold Cup was ope of the best betting races of the day, and provided a splendid finish, Grand Jury, Tentcall and Arikira being in line over the last half-furlong. “Snowy” Morris rode a great race on Arikira and extracted the last ounce out of his mount to win on the post. Orapai was the only absentee and Grand Jury (£2494). was made a solid favourite over Arisus ( £IS7J), Arikira (£I49J) and Tobaccoland (£l2Bs). There was a false start, but the field eventually went off fairly well, Tentcall showing out first from Tobaccoland, Joyspear and Grand Jury. Around the bend TentcAll and Joyspear were together apd were followed into the back stretch by Tobaccoland, Rich Harvest, Grand Jury, Werata, Arikira, Banbridge and Monalof. Half a mile' from home Tentcall was clear of Joyspear, Grand Jury and Bpnbridge, and into the straight the order was unchanged, except that Arikita was beginning his run. Jbyspear was the first beaten and Grand Jury challenged Tentcall. Arikira came past and joined the leaders at the distance, and in a fine finish got home by a head from Grand Jury, while Tentcall, who stopped badly, was a good length away and Banbridge, Joyspeir, Monalof, Arisus, Tobaccoland, Werata apd Statuary. Arikira has previously done best at seven furlongs, but Morris did not rush him along until coming into the straight and he rode a vigorous finish on him over the last 50 yards. Grand Jury rar. a good race and, in stronger hands might have reversed the placings with Arikira. Tobaccojand had every chance, but Arisus and Statuary struck a lot of trouble.
