OTAIRI’S EGMONT CUP

OPENING OF SUMMER MEETING

FLYING HANDICAP, TO BAYACRE ARIKIRA WINS NOLAN GOLD CUP The Egmont Racing Club’s summer meeting opened yesterday fine weather, but as was to be expected in view of the calamity ithat had befallen the Hawke’s Bay district and the Dominion generally the attendance and the totalisator investments both showed it decline. Racing was interesting, fields being good and the majority of jbhe finishes close. A field of nine contested the Egmont Cup, the [winner being the Awapuni-trained Otairi, with the Featherston gelding Vertigern second and the Waipawa gelding Chopin third. [The Flying Handicap was won by the Otaki gelding Bayacre, with [the New Plymouth-owned Ridgemount and the Featherston[fcrained Tenterden placed in a field of nine. A big field of 15 teontested the Nolan Hack Cup, which the Foxton-owned Arikira [won from Grand Jury and Tentcall. A feature of the meeting was the success of visiting horses, only two Taranaki-trained horses (gaining first places.

MANY INTERESTING RACES ■pUCOBSS OF VISITING HORSES. £>ROP IN ATTENDANCE FIGURES. The club could under ordinary condi(tfions have looked forward with confidi. cnee to a record gathering for its fif[teenth cup meeting. The gate receipts as compared with the first day of the last Brimmer meeting, which was held prior,to Christmas, showed a decline of about £BO, being only £366 this year, [while the totalisator staff handled £10,311 ilOs as: compared with £16,512 for the first day last year, a -decrease of £6500 JOs. Racing, however, was of an interesting feature 'throughout. Fields' were of good dimensions and mostly of high class. Mr. X Tronson made a very successful debut ps [handicapper in this district, bringing [the fields ‘close together, with the result that there were some splendid finishes; indeed, "in the Whareroa Handicap thejudge, Mr*«AY. P. Russell, was unable to first two. The handicapper too; ad the winners fairly well con- ■ \cealed. ( Sir. A. Patterson was not quite bo successful in his debut as starter, two ofjwie six contestants in the hurdle race fairing tb get away and taking no part id |the race, while in some of the ether events the despatches did not meet [with general favour. A feature was the success of visiting fetorses,? Who filled all Hie places in the Cup besides winning the Flying, the Nolan Cup, the Hurdle Race and the Waipapa and dead-heating in the Whareroa Handicap. The Hawera-trained Isa won She Juvenile Handicap and the New Ply-imouth-owned Orapai won the Tokaora pack. Nine' contested the Egmont Cup, the IBtratford Cup winner, High Faintin', being made favourite with the locallyjowned Silvermine also well backed. Siljvermine was the early leader and High [Faintin' was in front at the turn, but ptairi however, came fast over the last jbit to- win by a neck from Vertigern. [The Flying Handicap also attracted & field of nine. Bayacre, who was made favourite,/was always up with Ridgemount and secured the verdict in a great finish by a neck. Grand Jury was made [favourite in a field of 15 for the Nolan jCup and was close up when Tentcall led [well into the straight. Arikira, however, feme with a burst over the last bit and irot the verdict by a head from Grand sury. After the race Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., Preferred to the calamity that had taken place on the east coast, remarking that jit was* under exceedingly unfortunate circumstances that the race meeting had- ' [had to go on. • All associated with racing [would'realise how awkward it was to postpone or to abandon the races. All [wouldagree that the sporting section of fer exnqs sir euop peg Anunmmoj eqt}. giving relief on former occasions and no Idoubt in connection with this terrible [calamity also they would be prepared to feo their part. Referring to the race Mr. Dickie said (that the Nolan Cup, which had been inaugurated in memory of the late Sir [Robert Nolan, a man who had done much [to relieve suffering in the Great War, [had again provided a splendid race, and he congratulated the owner, trainer and [jockey. Mrs. J. Gray, wife of the presiIdent of the club, presented the gold cup [to Mr. Bryant, who accepted it on behalf fef his mother, Mrs. G. E. Bryant, Foxfeon. Mr. Bryant handed the president [£s for the earthquake relief fund. Mr. A. Moore as usual had given the ieourse & thorough preparation and it [was in splendid order. Mr. A. Wilson, [the stipendiary steward, was present, [but there were no inquiries. L. G. Morris [rider-of Isa, and L. H. Watson, rider of (Sporting Chance in the Juvenile Handileap, were each fined £2 for endeavouring to improve their positions at the barUfier. L. DETAILS OF THE RACING. !)
