POSITIONS AS TEACHERS EDUCATION BOARD IN PROTEST. "MARKED DIFFERENCES OF OPINION / “ — By Telegraph.—-Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. After a long discussion, marked by some very definite differences of opinion, th* Wellington Education Board to-day passed a resolution by eight votes to six that owing to the large number of i teachers, particularly single women, who were out of employment, the board joined with Auckland, Otago and Cant.rbury in strongly protesting to the department against the continued employment of married teachers in cases where their circumstances were such as to cause no necessity for doing so. Some members said, the board should concern itself with efficiency and considered that inquiries into married women teachers’ financial circumstances before appointment were not justified. Other members hold that a teacher should give a declaration that she wafl dependent upon teaching for her livelihood before taking an appointment.. The senior inspector, Dr. Mcllwraith, thought a smalN section of the community should not be singled out. There might be a girl with a father earning £2O a week who obtained a job, while a woman with a husband earning £5 might be debarred. He thought it better to reduce some of the big single salaries rather than cut xn-.t one of the small double salaries. | Another member held that many woken were, evading family responsibilities Is the result of employment.
