Masterton, Last NightThere was an attendance of about 40 .•farmers from all parts of the Wairarapa at a meeting called by the Wairarapa provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union to-day to discuss the economic situation and outlook. A resolution was passed declaring that a moratorium would not be in the best interests of the producers during the present period of depression-, and no approve? was given to'proposals for the. reduction of interest rates and for the capitalisation of interest. It was suggested by some speakers that a special tribunal might be needed to give mortgagors relief in'exceptional cases of hardship, ■ ' .;: ' , ’ Another resolution urged the Government to strengthen the rural intermediate credit scheme by its own financial backing and to increase the permitted percentage of advances On stock. It was urged powerfully by the Hon. A. D .McLeod and other speakers that a comprehensive reduction of costs was by far the most.effective remedial measure that could be taken -and that Parliament should be called together as soon as the prime Minister returned to deal with the situation. Thp final resolution of the day was: That this representative, meeting of Wairarapa farmers deems it of paramount importance that Parliament meeimmediately aftej the return of the Prime Minister for the purpose of taking steps to meet the economic inquiremerits of the country with a view to reducing costs generally and the . cost of government in particular.
