\ SPECIAL SOCIAL AfFTERNOON. • A social afternoon in aid of the Victoria League’s 'backblocks literature and similar work was .held at the New Plymouth rooms of the league yesterday. The hostesses were Mesdames W. H. Skinner and H. B. Lepper. The members also took the opportunity of en- • tertaining their president, Mrs., G. M. Burgess, on the occasion of her birthday anniversary. After the singing of the National Anthem Mrs. Skinner, on behalf < f tne league, presented Mrs. Burgess with a ■posy and on behalf of the council of the league with a bouquet. . Mr. Skinner also congratulated Mrs. Burgess upon her long connection with the Victoria League and on the splendid work she was doing, not only -n the 1 league but in general social work in the town. He made special reference to Mrs. Burgess’ war work and her interest in the returned soldiers, in which work Mr. Burgess had also co-operated. In the absence of Archdeacon F. G. Evans Canon E. H. Strong expressed the thanks of the clergy to Mrs. Burgess for her. good work inr, the distribution of lierature, which had been of wonderful assistance. Several produce, fancywork and o.the Mails were conducted, the stallholders ■being Mrs. Skinner and Mrs. Lepper, and Misses E. and H. Rawson and Marshall. Afternoon tea was sen cd and a birthday cake cut.
