The 14,000 ton motor-ship Highland Hope struck a reef on the Farjlhoes Islands at four o’clock this morning in a dense fog. Over 100 passengers were embarked in six lifeboats in a pitiful plight, mostly half-dressed and some only in night clothes. Portuguese trawlers in response to the SOS were quickly on the scene and towed the boats safely to the shore. A portion of the crew was also rescued similarly. The captain and the remainder of the crew remained aboard to assist the salvage steamers which are speeding to the vessel’s assistance. The position o-f the Highland Hope is perilous. She is lying among dangerous rocks and ceased to reply t,o a wireless call at 10 o’clock. The Farilhoes are 20 miles from the coast of Portugal and 50 miles north of Lisbon. A later message from Lisbon states that the Highland Hope’s 535 passengers and crew, including 233 Spanish migrants were rescued. Only one was injured and he was a Spaniard who jumped overboard. The passengers included a septuagenarian, Mary, Duchess of Hamilton. Captain T. J. Jones, who was the last ashore, stated that the ship was apparently doomed.
