EVERYBODY’S THEATRE.

“THE ARGYLE CASE.” >

“The Argyle Case,” heading the programme at Everybody’s, New Plymouth, to-night, will star Thomas 'Meighan in his first talking role. The vitaphone version of the celebrated stage success of Harriett Ford and Harvey J; O’Higgins gives the star splendid opportunity for the use of his talents; He plays Hie part of Alexander Kayton, master detective, whose duty it is to locate the murderer of the wealthy John: Argyle. By deductive reasoning he tries the group of suspected persons until the real culprit is apprehended. His performance is dignified and impressive. Lila Lee charmingly impersonates th© foster daughter of the slain man. While under suspicion she wins the love of the detective. Zazu Pitts gives an amazingly fine characterisation 'as Mrs. Wyatt, loquacious housekeeper, and the mountainous Bert Roach supplies a unique brand of comedy. H. B. Warner’s restrained power is felt in his portrayal of the suave but sihister Hurley. Howard Bretherton has succeeded in creating the ominous atmosphere of the house of j mystery and has handled his charctera with understanding. .The well-knit plot, the suspense and thrills of “The Argyle Case” are splendidly recreated. The supporting programme will include Pathe news, Mexican Tipica’ Orchestra, “The Four Aristocrats” (instrumental and .vocal' quartette), and Benjamin Gigli (leading tenor of Metropolitan Grand Opera Company).

Fast, fresh and youthful is an apt do . scription of the peppy, happy picture that is the attraction at The Regent thciitre, New Plymouth, commencing tonight. It is a Paramount picture called “Sweetie,” whose gay and youthful cast , will keep you in a state of hilarity and happiness for two hours. “Sweetie” is the kind of picture that makes you glad, ’ the kind of picture that will make you forget the little trials and tribulations of the day and spend a couple of hours of restful happiness in the theatre. It is a story of college'; mot to say that it is the same as many of the college stories that you have seen. “Sweetie” tells of a girl’s love for a young man whose ambition and' thoughts in life are when he is captain of his college football team. The girl through a freak will inherits the college and then things begin to hum. Nancy Carroll, Paramount red headed bundle of charm and vivacity, is the girl who causes alj the trouble and Helen Kane, a new star in pictures, are the two featured players j in the cast. Also featured are Jack, Oakie, Stanley Smith, a newcomer, and William Austin. For the happiness that you will, enjoy you cannot afford to > let this picture go by.
