DOMINION LADIES’ GOLF

FORM DISPLAYED NOT GOOD.

NORTH DEFEATS THE SOUTH.

By Telegraph.—Press Association.

Wellington, Last Night. Fortune smiled on the thirty-fourth annual championship meeting of - the New Zealand Ladies’ Golf Union, whieh opened on the Heretaunga links to-day. The most picturesque course in the Dominion was in ideal form. The links , were bathed in sunshine and only a light northerly breeze had to be contended with. Strangely enough, the form displayed under such ideal conditions was disappointing for such a galaxy. The chief trouble seemed to be that the majority of the players found the fairways and greens very merry after the Hokiwhitu course at Palmerston North. The principal event to-day was the inter-island match between teams of eight, which was played in . the morning and resulted in a sweeping victory for the North Island by six games to two. Miss Bessie Gaisford (Marton), who has this season already won the Napier, Hastings, Dannevirke and Wanganui championships, was promoted to the honour of No. 1 for the North Island and fully justified the confidence reposed in her by defeating Mrs. Dodgshun (Dunedin), New Zealand’s woman champion, by 4 up and 3. The sensation of the day was Miss Oliver Kay’s victory over Mrs. Guy Williams by such a margin as 8 up .vtid 7. The only other South Island player to record a win was Miss’ Acheson (Nelson), who played very steadily to befit Miss Culling (Auckland), by 4 and 2. Following are the results, North Island players being mentioned first in each instance: — Miss Gaisford (Marton) beat Mrs. Dodgshun (Otago), 4 and 3. Mrs. Guy Williams (Masterton) Jost to Miss 0. Kay (Otago), 8 and 7. Miss Barnett (Miramar) beat~ Mies Chrystall (Christchurch), 6 and 5. . Miss Culling (Auckland) lost to Miss Acheson (Nelson), 4 and 2. Mrs. Hosking (Auckland) beat Miss Beadel (Christchurch), 7 and 5. Miss Watson (Manawatu) beat Mrs. -Slee (Westport), 4 and 3. Miss Petrie (Miramar) beat Miss Rutherford' (Hawarden), 3 and 2. Mrs. Foreman (Miramar) beat Mrs. Godby (Christchurch), 4 and 2. A large field entered for the foursome championship for the Hawke’s Bay Cups but there again the golf was not up to the best New Zealand standard. The winners were Mrs. Guy Williams and Miss Watson, who played a round with Miss Kay and Miss M. Payton (Auckland). The winners went out in 41 and returned in 40, Miss Watson finishing the round sensationally by running down a 30ft putt on the home green for four. Miss Kay and Miss Payton could do nothing right and spent most of their time in bunkers of repentance. A foursome handicap competition was played in conjunction with the foursome championship' and resulted in a win for Miss M. Whyte and Mrs. G. Stott with a score of 95 —20—75.
