£299 OWING TO CREDITORS

MAN WITH ELEVEN CHILDREN; NO PROSPECTS FOR REPAYMENT. Unsecured debts amounting to £299 were shown at a meeting of creditors in the bankrupt estate of William D. Parkes in the office of the D.O.A. (Mr. J. S. S. Medley) at New Plymouth yesterday. Mr. J. H .Sheat, representing Mr. D. G. Smart, Hawera, was the only creditor present. Mr. R. G. Brokcnshire appeared for Parkes. Tlie meeting was adjourned sine die. He was a married man with eleven children, said bankrupt. Eight children were dependent upon him. Three years ago he was working for the New' Plymouth Harbour Board as a crane driver, earning £5 10s per week. The Harbour Board reduced the number of its workmen and he was dismissed. He was out of permanent employment for 12 months. During that time he obtained what casual work he could. There had been a. fair amount of sickness in his family during .the past three years. Owing to . these . happenings he had incurred debts which he had been unable to meet and he had . also been unable to pay older debts. For the same cause, he was unable to keep up payments to the State Advances. Department in respect of the home in his wife s name, and the home had been sold by tho department. As some of the creditors wore pressing him —one going to the extent of a judgment summons —he, was forced to file. In any case he could make no headway under his load of debt. He was now working for a company at present boring for oil and was receiving £6 10s per week. He found with the number of his dependents that his present wage left no margin for creditors. The principal creditors were: D. G. Sinart (Hawera) £2B 14s Od; M’. D. Julian, £4 0s 9d; W. G.. .Battey, £l3 19s 2d.;. A-. F. Aldie, £6 Us ,9d; A. George,' £5 Gs Cd; Dr. P. C. Davie, £2O; J.
