OPUNAKE NEWS

FARMERS’ UNION MEETING. The Opunake Branch of the Farmers’ Union held a meeting on Wednesday evening. Mr. F. Young presided. The attendance of members was moderate. The principal business was a debate on the- petrol tax. The Awatuna branch delegates were welcomed by the chairman, the welcome being acknowledged by Mr. W. Davidson. Awatuna debaters, Hed by Mr. M. Vouillare, took the affirmative and Opunake with Mr. N. L. F. Chambers as leader, the negative. At' the conclusion ■ Mr. Chambers thanked the Awatuna members for materially assisting to make the evening a success. Supper wa.s provided and Air. Davidson (Awatuna) thanked Opunake for the pleasant time spent and hoped the debate was the forerunner, of others, which would make the union meetings more popular. The chairman of the Oaqnui Dairy Company stated that the petrol tax had increased the company’s cartage price to Is per ton extra.
