HIGHWAYS BOARD GRANTS
CRITICISM OF GOVERNMENT. NORTH ISLAND MOTORISTS ACT. By Telegraph—Pr«M Assn. —Copyright. Wanganui, Last Night. Criticism of the Government’s action in connection with the measures contained in the Finance Bill regarding the Alain Highways Board funds was made by Air. A. E. Ansell}, M.P., speaking as a motorist, at the annual conference of the North Island Alotor Union at Wanganui to-day. Free grants to the board, he said, now had to meet interest and sinking fund. Such action in a business code of ethics would be dishonourable, but the Government had allowed necessity to overrule. The speaker urged the union to combine with the counties and farmers to fight the measure before it came before the House next year to be reconsidered. Air. Ansell described the latest developments as the most serious crisis that had ever confronted the motorists of the Dominion.
The conference later empowered the executive to take action.
Mr. W. O’Callaghan (Hawera) was elected president, and Dr. Porrit (Wanganui) and Air. A. J. Toog6od (Wellington) were elected vice-presidents.
