ESCAPEE IN DOG BOX
EXTRA YEAR’S IMPRISONMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Aug. 5. Scorringe, the escapee from the Waikune prison camp, who travelled to Wellington in the dog box of a railway van -on June 17, was dealt with today. / it appears that he was employed in a position of trust at Waikune, working about motor-cars and machinery, and was allowed more liberty than other prisoners. . Counsel pleaded that Scorringe’s sole idea was to come to Wellington to see his sick mother and then to give .himself up. Scorringe’s father appealed to the Court to deal with his son as leniently as possible. Mr. E. Page, SAL; lw we ver, said he was not able to look leniently upon the offence. Scorringe had a substantial list of previous convictions, some for sei'ious offences. He was sentenced to 12 months’ hard labour, to be served at the expiration of his existing term.
