REASON FOR PETROL TAX
USUAL FUNDS FOR HIGHWAYS. LOCAL RATE SUBSIDY CONTINUES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Whangarei, Aug. 5. Speaking at a special meeting of the Chamber of Commerce last night Mr. A. J. Murdoch, Minister of Agriculture, explained the Government’s proposals in regard to the petrol tax. He said the consolidated fund had no' money - . with which to continue the annual grant of £235,000 to the main highways fund. The petrol tax was the only alternative which Parliament could approve or reject as it liked. . t ' Mr. Murdoch stated xlefinitely that there was no intention of stopping the subsidy on local body rates. He did not think that the proposal to charge the interest transfers from the consolidated fund would be adopted.
