BANK HOLIDAY SOAKING
TRAINS TN COLLISION DEATH ROLL REACHES 24 MANY CASES IN HOSPITAL By Telegraph— Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 7.55 p.m. London, Aug. 5. The wettest bank holiday [or ten years drove holiday-makers indoors. Gales and thunderstorms made bathing and boating almost impossible. The King’s yacht Britannia withdrew from the day’s racing, and there were only two other competitors, of whom one finished.
Scores of visitors arrived at the seaside resorts carrying coats which were soaked before their departure. The majority of sports were cancelled.
Serious accidents, including a deathroll of 24, marred the holiday. Two trains from Blackpool collided, resulting in 190 hospital cases, but Hampstead Heathers kept up the traditional ■Cockney jollifications. The Duchess of York had a very quiet birthday, the only celebration being a small family gathering at Glamis Castle. The Forfar cattle market presented a most animated scene, where a thousand farmers drank the Duchess’ health.
