Tamil; Rakei, E Edwards, Hene.ri, Tuka, Ran. Waimate backs were handling care, lessly and when they made a dash tc the line there was a knock-on near the goal. Good line-kicks took the bal to Waimate’s corner, Mura being pul into touch by aggressive attackers. Waimate responded with an offensive, anc open kicking followed. Gray made a bold attempt to get away, but was smothered by Waimate forwards. Ramfl essayed an advance-but his work was quickly undone by a Waimate advance from* which a score was made by J Rei after several had combined in the movement. Hcneri’s kick went just outside the post. Line-outs formed a considerable portion of the play. Tamanui secured near halfway and attempted a pot at

goal. The ball hit the bar and bounced back. Waimate backs started a passing turn, but K. Broughton again came to light in time and kicked upfield Waitotara took play to Waimate’s corner, things looking dangerous for the home team. Serums in front of the goal had the defence busy and suddenly R. Broughton slipped across and scored, He converted his own try, thus putting the challengers two pointe ahead. Waimate made a hot attack, and the

way looked open when K. Broughton mishandled, but a knock-on by Awahou lost the opportunity. Vigorous onslaughts were made by Waimate around the twenty-five line without result. Both sides were playing with characteristic willingness. At half-time the challengers still had a lead of five to three after a fairly even struggle. Waimate backs passed to J. Rei, who took the ball to the twenty-five. Whakarua upset another passing bout by intercepting. Rakei and Waimate’s pack broke away from halfway and rushed the ball over the line. K. Broughton, however, forced. From a loose scramble in front of the goal W. King scored, Maku adding the points. Waimate backs gave a good display of passing and kicking. Another hot attack carried play to the line. K. Broughton secured but he was swept back and had to run back over the line and force. Waimate continued the pressure. Full-back Broughton was again prominent in defence and T. Broughton led a great forward rush. Gray, D. Broughton and Rama figured in forward play near Waimate’s line, but tho visitors had io force twice. Heneri, who had been doing well in the vanguard, led a rush, kicked to near goal, picked up and grounded a further try. Edwards failed to convert. With ten minutes to go the game became fast. Rama started a good advance and with assistance sent the bail to near Waimate’s line, where Wineera saved. T. Rei secured from midfield and after a brisk run passed to Hikaka, who scored.
