THE LAW ON FLOGGING
WARNING GIVEN BY JUDGE.
By Telegraph.—Press Association.
Auckland. Last Night. . A warning that men who commit indecent - assaults on women and children could be ordered floggings by the Court in addition to a term of eaven years’ imprisonment was given by Mr. Justice Herdman at the Supreme Court when dealing with Al tert Bache, who had pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting a girl of ten years. Mr. Noble, for the accused, said it was one of those inexplicable cases which at times came before the courts. Bache had been in the army for four and a-half years and. had been resident in New Zealand only twelve months. His Honour: He has made a bad start. His Honour said that at all criminal, sessions there were always a 'number of cases'like this one. “To indicate how seriously the law regards this class of offence there is a section in the Statute which, in addition to providing imprisonment up to seven years, allows the offender to be flogged one. two or three times,- according to his age. I don’t propose to order a flogging, but it is just as well men of your class should understand the position. Women and children must be protected. Yoti will be sentenced to imprisonment for three years with hard labour.”
