PIONEER LADY’S DEATH
MISS EDITH MAXWELL.The funeral of the late Miss Edith jane Maxwell took place on Thursday afternoon in the Old Military Cemetery at Tauranga, reports the Bay of Plenty Tinies, the body being laid to rest'in a plot adjoining the graves of the late Archdeacon Brown aiid his family, and that of the deceased lady’s mother. Born at Kilniore, Victoria, the late Miss Maxwell came to Wellington with her mother and otlier members of the family in 1866, following the death of her father, the Rev. Andrew Maxwell. They took up their residence at Wadestown, where then resided the late Judge Johnson, brother of Mrs. Maxwell, In 1887, following the death of Mrs. Brown, widow of Archdeacon Brown, and sister of the late Mrs. Maxwell, Miss Maxwell came to Tauranga with her mother and sister- —Miss Alice Maxwell —the family taking up their residence at thelms,” a property which then extended from Brown Street to the sea beach. For many years Mrs. Maxwell and her daughters interested themselves in various public activities and the “Elms” was on numerous occasions the centre of much charitable endeavour, particularly in connection with the work of Dr. Barnardo’s Homes. In that direction their efforts were unique, aS' in addition to the endowment of some three cots for those homes, many other donations have gone forward for the ivbrk. The late Miss Maxwell also rendered? much valuable aid in connection with the Horticultural Society. Afterthe death of Mrs. Maxwell in 1919, the two Misses Maxwell lived more or less in retirement, enjoying the peaceful rest of an ideal home, and the high esteem and respect of many intimate friends, as was strikingly illustrated by the number of beautiful wreaths carried to the graveside. The chief mourners at the funeral yesterday were Miss Alice Maxwell, and Mr. and-Mrs. E. Maxwell, Rahotu, Taranaki.
