KAPONGA GIRL GUIDE?

SECOND BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED. (From Our Own Correspondent). ' The local troop of Girl Guides and Brownies celebrated its second birthday with a high tea in the town hall on Friday evening.' Present by special invitation were Mrs. D. Steven, Stratford, commissioner of Girl Guides for Central Taranaki, Miss Close, captain of the Stratford troop, Mrs. Houston, Hawera, commissioner for South Taranaki, her lieutenant, Miss Lennon, Hawera, Mrs. A. V. Tait, a life member of the committee, scoutmaster R. Gwyn and cubmaster V. C. Betts. More than sixty were present. Occupying prominent places on each end of the long table were two birthday cakes, one presented to the Guides by Mrs. J. Guy and one to the Brownies by Mrs. P. J; Cossum.

Mrs. Steven on ‘behalf of the Guides and Brownies presented Mrs. A. V. Tait with a “thanks badge.” Mrs, Steven explained that this was a badge not easily obtained by guides them-, selves, but was given in cases where exceptional help had been rendered to the movement. Only in three places for many miles round had these badges been issued. A cut glass dish on a silver stand was presented to Mrs. Tait by the members of the present executive committee in recognition of the services rendered by her whilst a member of the committee from which she had recently resigned for health reasons. A social attended by parents and friends was commenced at 7.30 p.m. Seven Brownies each bearing a letter of the word welcome opened the programme. Other items were the guide haka, an inspection of the company of guides by Mrs. Steven, physical drill, demonstration of first aid, and a number of f . ::gs, recitations and pianoforte solos by guides and brownies. Miss M. Johnson, captain of the troop, and lieutenants B. Cossum and Muriel Evans trained the entertainers.

The following Brownies were inducted and welcomed into the Guides by Captain Johnson: Loris Stanners, Joan Bremer, Joan Maguiness and Elsie Tattersall.
