BOWLING AT ELTHAM

CLOSING DAY OF SEASON. The bowling season on the Eltham green was formally closed on Thursday, when there was a large attendance of bowlers and their wives. Members of the ladies’ crbquet club were also invited and they took part in the .play, two ladies being in each rink. The play resulted:— Mrs. Hilmer, Mrs. Manley, W. Phillips, Jackson 13, v. Mrs. Renai, Mrs. MacDonald, Hasford, Vincent 8. Mrs. Vincent, Mrs. Morrison, Stunners, McQueen 17, v. Mrs. Bluett, Mrs. J. Harrison, J. Phillips, Best 13. Mrs. Fountaine, Mrs. Parker, Manley, Tiplady 16, v. Miss MacDonald, Mrs. Harrison, Linn, J. Stewart 18. Mrs. Gubb, Mrs. Bridger, Fountain?, Harrison 10) v. Mrs. Stanners ,Mrs. McKay, Bootten, Rowe 10. Mrs. Stanners, Mrs. Townsend, Barker, Astbury 15, v. Mrs. Tiplady, Mrs. Thomas, Gatenby, Woods 11. Mrs. Astbury, Mrs. Woods, Myhill, Carman 11, v. Mrs. McQueen, Mrs. Best, Morrison, Pennington 12.

The winners were Miss MacDonald, Mrs. Harrison, Linn and J. Stewart, being the team with the highest points. The president, Mr. J. W. Harrison, congratulated the ladies on their performance. He presented Miss MacDonald and Mrs. Harrison with handiome oil paintings of Mt. Egmont, and Messrs Linn and Stuart with mementos of the occasion.

Mr. and Mrs. John Redshaw, Papatoetoe, Auckland, are the guests of Mr. and Mns. H. R. Wickham. Mr. Les. Wood is an inmate of the Stratford Hospital with a broken ankle. Mrs. Dobson, Inglewood, is the guest of her sister, Mrs. J. Fraser. The annual school picnic was held on Thursday at the Waitara River, a new venue chosen by the school committee. A large crowd was present; Mr. J. A. Stanford’s big motor lorry had to make two trips for passengers other than those taken by private cars. The day proved ideal and the children had a glorious time. Most of the afternoon was occupied by races for the children, every child receiving a prize. A chain-stepping competition was won by Mr. George Goldup. The-Douglas North Road is finished and metalled.
