NEW METHODIST MINISTER

INDUCTION AT ELTHAM. The induction of the Rev. T, Coatsworth to the Eltham circuit took place on Thursday evening in the presence of a large congregation. The service was conducted by the Ker. Clarence Eaton, New Plymouth, chairman of the Tarahaki-iWanganui district.

No one man could build a church, said Air. Eaton; he could get an audience, but a church was a fellowship. It was pathetic to note the idea held by some that maybe a preacher from London would bring about a religious revival or that some Gypsy Smith would fill the churches and turn the tide of religious indifference. No one man, however gifted, elevated, influential and resourceful, could build a Christian church. Only a co-operative effort, a consecrated effort, of the people could contend against religious indifference.

The trouble with the world, said the preacher, was that there were so many competing for the allegiance of the people. He had heard' a number of people say they would not be ministers. They did not realise what it was to have the grand purpose before them. It was a great joy, and the small duties of a man’s .ministry became significant; a progression to a grander service. At the termination of the induction service supper was served in the Wesley Hall, and a very pleasant evening was spent in welcoming Mr. and Mrs. Coats worth. Mr. R. Lewis, chief circuit steward, presided. Musical items were given by Miss Marion Saunders (Auckland), ’cello solo; Mr. Harry Reynolds, solo; Mrs. Collingwood, Mrs. B. Turner, Mr. Peters and Mr. Anderson, quartette; Miss Black, solo; Mr. Anderson, solo. Mrs. A. Symmans was accompaniste. Addresses were given by the Revs. C. Eaton and E. S. Emmitt, in which they asked the congregation to loyally co-operate with and support their minister. The Rev. J. A. Ryburn also extended a cordial welcome on behalf of the other ministers of the town. THE AVON STARS. The Avon stars have again come to Eltham as a result of a rink skipped by A. Tiplady defeating an Inglewood rink skipped by F. 'Spurdie. The results are: —Inglewood (Martin, Roseworne, E. Spurdie, F. Spurdie) 11, v. Eltham (F. Vincent, J. P. Marx, J. R. M. Stewart, A. Tiplady) 22. GENERAL ITEMS. A motor smash occurred at the Eltham Road bridge outside the borough of Eltham on Wednesday night, when a car driven by Mr. 0. A. L. Cadwallader,: Greytown, a well-known trotting man, who was staying with his brother-in-law, Mr. J. Taylor, Lowgarth, crashed into the bridge rail. He was driving from Eltham to Lowgarth and when approaching the bridge was confused by the headlights of another car coming down Burke’s Hill, and not being acquainted with the road he swerved and struck the rails. A passenger in the •front seat, Mr. Vincent J. Ashton, of Carterton, received cuts from the broken glass and had to receive medical attention. . Mr, Cadwallader was uninjured. The car was exensively damaged. Members of the Stratford jersey Gattie Club met on Saturday to ballot for positions in the catalogue for the annual pedigree female sale of the club. The more you know about the goods that are stocked by the Auckland Warehouse Drapery and Clothing Store, of Stratford and Waitara, the better for you. Because when you know the difference between their, prices and the prices of others it is decidedly in your favour. The Auckland Warehouse Drapery and Clothing Store, of Stratford and Waitara, are known as the store of Better Values. PERSONAL ITEMS. The Rev. Father Walsh returned to Wellington on Saturday after a short visit to Stratford. KING’S THEATRE, STRATFORD. ALL-TALKING COMEDY. Reginald Denny, appearing as ‘’Napoleon” at a fancy dress ball, is “framed” as a real nut by persons wishing to steal his £600,000 inheritance. When word gets around that he really thinks he is “Napoleon,” the others present, also representing famous ' characters from history, band against him and precipitate a series of hilarious escapades. There, in a sentence, you have the striking situation that is productive of prolonged howls > of laughter in “One Hysterical Night,” Universal all-talking comedy starring Denny, showing at the King’s Theatre for the last time to-night. No more funnier situations could be imagined

than those that develop when Denny discovers the plot against him. -There is a hilarious sequence in which Paul Revere makes his wild ride on a sway'backcd horse and another in which William Tell begs a bow and arrow from Robin Hood and attempts to perform his well-known apple shooting trick with the apple setting on Denny's head. Then, too, there is a bridge game between Denny, the Duke of Wellington, Salome and Josephine that is a riot. Dainty Nora Lane plays opposite Denny in the role of his “Josephine.” She also thinks he is cuckoo, but fallo in love with him nevertheless.
