THE RACING DESCRIBED.

CLOSE FINISH IN HURDLES. (By Wire. —Special to News). Palmerston North, Dee. 28. The Tiritea Hurdles saw remarkably even wagering among tho eight acceptors. Democratic was favourite and the outsider, Red Bank, carried a considerable sum. Red Bank, Beaumont, Aurora Borealis and Diana’s Lad settled down in front, Fino Acre and the favourite being very slow to find their feet. Passing the stand the first time Rod Bank and Diana’s Lad were together in the lead from Beaumont, Jen and Aurora Borealis, with Novar last. Jen was under a strong pull entering the back the second time. Half a mile from home Aurora Borealis ran up to tho leaders and shortly afterwards Fine Acre and Democratic moved up from tho rear. Into the straight the leaders were Aurora Borealis, Fine Acre and Democratic in close order, with Diana’s Lad and Jen next. The first three took the last fence together but tho favourite struck it hard, leaving Aurora Borealis and Fine Acre to fight out a fine finish. The former won by a head, with Jen four lengths back. Next were Diana’s Lad, Democratic and Novar. SUCOCESS OF AIR FORCE. Awapuni produced the second winner of the day in Air Force, which beat another local horse in Plano in the Apprentices’ Handicap. The favourites were Phastar and Chopin, which finished behind the others. When they had settled down Royal Queen, Footpad and Arrowzone were at the head of a long string, and at the end of two furlongs the leaders were Royal Queen, Arrowzone, Chopin, Footpad and Air Force. Phastar improved its position crossing the top. Once heads were turned for home Air Force and Chopin drew clear, but Plane and Phastar came with a late run to divide them. Valma and Arrowzo.no headed the beaten division. DEFEAT OF FAVOURITES. Arajean was elected a red hot favourite for the Juvenile Handicap but tho Woodville filly gave a very disappointing display. Ball Dress, the second favourite, was also beaten after leading all the way, and had to be content with third place. The winner turned up in Sir Limond, whose bracket mate, Hystride, turned about when the tapes were-lifted. Tripping was always well placed and secured second berth a neck behind Sir Limoud. with. Ball Dress half a length further in the rear. Catherine of Aragon was feurih. Lord Thomond and Arajean were next. Right Bower fell beyond the half mile post but the rider was unhurt. Lord Thomond was close up with the leader till past the half furlong. AN EXCITING FINISH. Tho Liverpool Handicap provided a great hotting race and a slashing finish. Every horse except Masher carried a fair share of support. Teri, Blimp, Olairi and Atholspear tore to tho front as they swept along the straight. Three furlongs further Teri, Olairi, Full Murk, Blimp, Atholspear, Dolomite, Singleton ami raitonu was the order. Singleton forged ahead on tho turn and into the straight Teri, Full Mark and Otairi were in line with Blimp, Atholspear and Singleton. Atholspear drew out at tho distance and, pursued closely by Olairi, Full .Mark and Singleton, they passed the post in that order, heads separating them. Blimp and Teri were close up and Dolomite and Paitonu were together last, where they finished the previous day. HURLY BURLY JUST SCORES.

The Westbury Hack Handicap provided another stirring finish with the two best lightweights in the country battling out the issue. The best bnck-

’ed were Hurly Burly and Blue Paper, wuich were separated at the finishing line by Rational 11., heads only being between them. A very straggling start gave First. Ruler tho advantage, Rational 11. being one of the last to leave, while King Acre, tho third favourite, was affected to a lesser extent. When they had gone a furlong the order was Mangaharei, First Ruler, Emerald Abbey, Blue Paper and Hurly Burly. At the half mil© Blue Paper hit the front, piloting Hurly Burly. Emerald Abbey, Mangaharei and Ben Hur round the top turn. The first into the straight were Blue Paper and Hurly Burly, with Good Acre, Ben Hur and King Acre next and Rational 11. still in the ruck. Hurly Burly headed Blue Paper 100 yards from* home, and they were providing a great duel when Rational 11. came like a cannon shot, just failing to reach the favourite. Bon Hur was fourth. Good Acre, Mangaharei and King Acre finished together next. KEDDAR WINS BY A NOSE. Each of the seven competitors in tho Clandeboyo Handicap carried a fair share of the pool, Manly, Keddar and Roi do Vai being the actual favourites. Keddar and Raineses led the field to the back. The order at the six furlongs was Ramoses, Roi de Vai, Keddar, Borsaleno and Manly. Two furlongs further on Rameses, Keddar, Roi de Vai and Borsalene were at length intervals. Cerf put in a great run on the turn and was up with Rameses and Keddar it the straight entrance. Rameses then retired and Rory Mor joined issue with Keddar and Cerf, Keddar winning by a nose, with Cerf half a length behind Rory Mor. Manly, Borsalene and Rameses were next. OSCAR NARROWLY BEATEN. The neglected Oscar was a good thing beaten for tho Christmas Handicap, superior horsemanship permitting the favourite, Clarendon, to win by half a length, with Balloon, a double winner at the meeting, a similar distance away. Habit showed the way out from the barrier, and at the half mile was followed by Singer. Roundelay. Patearoa, Warzone and Clarendon. The favourite was right up with Habit crossing the top, witii Singer, Rich Harvest and Patearoa lying handy. Into the straight Habit, Clarendon. Rieh Harvest, Singer, Patearoa and Oscar were bunched, while Balloon was making groat headway round the field. In the run homo Clarendon dropped Habit and was closely pursued by Oscar, who, wretchedly ridden, failed to catch Clarendon by half a length. Behind the stake earners were Singer, Rich Harvest, Patearoa and Habit. FERNDEN WINS COMFORTABLY. There was heavy wagering on the Kawau Handicap. Fernden was the favourite, with Callanmore, Royal Duke and Gold Dawn evenly backed. Fernden won handsomely from Royal Duke by two and a-half lengths, with Gold Dawn a length further away. From the start the order was Callanmore, Fernden, Gold Dawn and Royal Duke. At the half mile Maeroom was in front of the favourite, with Gold Dawn, King Wanga, Callanmore and Royal Duke in that order. The position at the home turn was unchanged, and once in line Fernden went away. Callanmore, Macroom and King Wanga finished after the placed horses.
