THE LESSEE OF PHAR LAP.

MR. TELFORD ON HOLIDAY. ANXIOUS TO SEE SOME SNOW. On holiday bent, Mr. H. R. Telford, lessee of the well-performed three-year-old Phar Lap, arrived on the Ulimaroa at Auckland on Tuesday. He will spend about three weeks in New Zealand. “Don’t worry me, please,” pleaded Mr. Telford good-naturedly when he was approached by newspaper interviewers on the wharf. “I’m tired of reporters — they never give me any peace in Australia. They used to knock me up at all hours, and were always ringing the door-bell. “I’ve come here to have a real rest. Somewhere with plenty of snow will suit me. I think I shall make for Queenstown, and perhaps I shall fly south in a ’plane, if I can get one.” Mr. Telford shook his head when asked if he was here on business. He brought no racehorses with him. Phar Lap is out of work, resting at Bacchus Marsh, Melbourne. Having served Jiis apprenticeship in Dunedin, Mr. Telford is looking forward to renewing old acquaintanceships in the Otago district. Phar Lap was bred in New Zealand and sold for 160 guineas at the national sales at Trentham in January, 1927. He was taken to Australia immediately and subsequently was leased by Mr. Telford from Mr. D. Davis. Phar Lap has turned out a great proposition in racing on the other side of the Tasman. He won both Derbies and the A.J.C. Craven Plate. He was a hot favourite for the Melbourne Cup, but had to be content with third place behind two other New Zealand bred and owned horses, Nightmarch and Paquito.
