LIGHTS FOR SPORTSGROUND

MOST POPULAR MAN CONTEST.

EFFORT BY AMATEUR ATHLETES.

An election to discover the most popular man in New Plymouth is to be the means of raising funds for installing a modern and permanent lighting system in the sportsground oval at Pukekura Park. Tho decision was made yesterday by a sub-committee appointed 'by vne

New Plymouth Amateur Athletic Club and comprising Messrs. J. S. 8. Medley (president of the club), A. S. Hunter (club captain) and G. H. Weir (secretary and convenor). One more candidate has yet to be selected in addition to the following nine

who have consented to stand for the contest: Messrs. C. H. Weston, James McNeill, James McLeod, P. E. Stainton,

G. M. Spence, Walter Graham, P. J. Flannagan, A. K. Smart and B. Tippins. It is proposed to commence the contest early next week and to close it on December 31. Votes will cost 3d each and books of 30 may be obtained from members of the club. As there is so little

time for general organisation, the hope has been expressed that public bodies and sports bodies with which the various candidates are connected will undertake sectional organisation. The first progress report of the poll will be displayed in a window in Devon Street next Fri-

day and thereafter further results will be posted at regular intervals. The parks at Hawera and Wanganui and the Wellington Basin Reserve have permanent lighting systems installed, and it is pointed out that besides show-

ing a pro-fit the installations make it possible to hold evening meetings at which some of the world’s champion athletes may be seen in action. They have

proved valuable assets in every way, and the object of the New Plymouth club is to provide funds for the equipment of the sportsground in a similar manner, thus providing a service not only for amateur athletics but one that will benefit other associations desiring to hold popular evening gatherings on the oval.
