RURAL MAILS

EXTENSION OF DELIVERIES. i A GREAT BOON TO SETTLERS. I ; The Taranaki Daily News entered in- , to a contract with the Post Office for the I carriage of mails in the Stratford. Pemi broke, Midhirst, Pukengahu and Ngaere ' districts, and instituted its third motor delivery system radiating from the Stratford office of the paper. The new service will commence on December 2, when three modern cars will take up full loads of papers at Stratford and cover a total 'distance of over 200 miles between 5.30 a.m. and 9 a.m. daily, thus effectually blanketing main and by-roadfl throughout the wfiole of Central Taranaki and connecting with numerous deliveries of the News witlun this area. Residents who have postal boxes on the Stratford-Ngaere rural delivery should note that mails for those districts,, which hitherto closed at Ba.m., will from -December 2 close at 8 p.m., and by reason of an alteration in the route of the mailman, the northern portion of the area will be served first. The approximate times of delivery will be: Pembroke Road 5.50 a.m., Monmouth Road 0.10 a.m., Midhirst-Tuna 6.25 a.m., Beaconsfield Road 6.40 a.m., Te Popo 7 a.m., Ahuroa Road 7.15 a.m., Skinner Road 7.30 a.m., Bird Road 7.45 a.m., Robson Road 8 a.m., Waipapa Road 8.15. a.m., Wingrove Road 8.40 a.m., Cheat Road 9 a.m., Ngaere 9.10 a.m., Stratford rural district 9.30 a.m. Thus the latter half from the Ahuroa Road right round to Ngaere will receive -the Daily News and mail matter a good deal earlier than at present, for the service will in future be finished at about the time it has commenced in the past. There will be 70 miles to be covered, all through districts contiguous to Stratford and Eltham, and it is interesting to note that there is only one home on the route of this closely settled and highly productive area which does not subscribe to the News. The settlers are all potential purchasers of retail goods in town. In addition to speeding up distribution in the districts mentioned, the new delivery will enable the already established News service throughout the eastern districts of Toko, Huinga, Douglas, Tututawa, Puniwhakau and Huiroa to be effected about an hour earlier than at present. PERSONAL ITEMS. Dr. Doria Gordon, honorary secretary of the New Zealand Obstetrical Society, left for Auckland this morning on a brief visit in connection with the work of the society. ORGANISATION OF SPORTS. ATHLETIC CLUB ACTIVITY. The annual meeting of the Stratford Athletic Club was held last night, Mr. E. H. Young presiding over a good attendance of members. The report and balance-sheet, already published, were adopted. It would be seen from the balancesheet, said Mr. Young, that a profit of £l2 had been made on the year’s working. Had it not been for the members’ subscriptions, which totalled £2B, and a rebate of ground rent granted by the Borough Council, that result could not have been accomplished. Mr. Young expressed his appreciation of the way the members of the executive had assisted him. Officers elected were: Patron, Mr. W. J. Polson, M.P.; president, Mr. J. W. McMillan; five vice-presidents; executive, Messrs. J. Crockett, G. Jones, T. Kirkwood, W. F. Ross, A. J. Davey, W. Abraham, J. C, McDowell, with power to add; treasurer, Mr. E. H. Young; honorary auditor, Mr. R. R. Tyrer; secretary, Mr. C. C. Johnston; delegates to centre, Messrs. Kirkwood and Johnston; grounds committee, Mr. Kirkwood. Following last year’s procedure, the Taranaki Scottish Society will be asked to organise the Scotch events. Application will be made to the centre to allot Stratford the third Thursday in March for the annual sports meeting. Thanks were accorded to the secretary, who was voted an honorarium of £5 ss, to the borough foreman, Mr. L. B. Davis, for his attention -to the grounds, and to Mr. Young for the able way he had carried out his duties.
